"The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it." (Marx, Theses on Feuerbach, 1845, Thesis XI) · When Radio 4 recently held a poll to find the 'nation's favourite philosopher', the winner by a landslide was Karl Marx. This, despite a campaign by The Economist to get their readers to vote for David Hume, under the argument that although Marx...

The UK and Capitalism's New Economy - Part Two: The Value of Capitalist Services

(Image - Global economic activity - World Bank) · Introduction · In the first part of this article we noted that four out of five jobs in the UK are now officially classified as “services”. The UK is in the forefront of a tendency amongst the richest capitalist countries whereby “services” form an increasingly large part of GDP.

Uzbekistan - Another Episode of the New Great Game

(From Battaglia Comunista 6, June 2005) · The following text is translated from the paper of our sister organisation in Italy. The "Great Game" it refers to is the one played out by rival imperialist powers for more than two centuries in Central Asia. Today, in some ways, the stakes are higher as these states have added oil production to their strategic significance.

Only Communism Can Make Poverty History

"2.8bn people, approximately half the population of the world, live on less than $1.20 per day. · The world's three richest people control more wealth than all 600 million people in the world's poorest countries. (1)" · As far as bourgeois propaganda campaigns go, “Make Poverty History” ranks among the more sophisticated.

The Great African Charade - Aid and Debt Relief

Introduction · In 2004 Blair set up a commission for Africa which produced a report in March this year calling for an extra $25bn in additional annual aid for Africa together with debt relief for the poorest countries. By setting up this commission, the UK government was able to present itself as the leader of the anti-debt, anti-poverty lobby.

The Future of the European Union - A Challenge for the European Ruling Class

On 2nd May we lost Mauro Stefanini. He was killed by cancer, the illness of our miserable age. Right up to the end we hoped his vitality and will to live would enable him to win through, but it wasn't to be. The disease won, even if it didn't succeed in humiliating him as it came up against his insurmountable reserves of courage and dignity.

Make Poverty History? Make Capitalism History!

Tributes from other comrades

From Comrade Dédé on behalf of Bilan et Perspectives, affiliate of the Bureau in France · ...Naturally I had understood that that there could be no other conclusion, but this news has upset me deeply. I am thinking of the grief of Franca and of his daughters, of Gea who is still so young. I am thinking of all the comrades who knew and appreciated Mauro for years and years.

Editorial

To say that these are difficult times for revolutionaries is to take understatement to the point of caricature. We are living through one of the longest economic crises in capitalism’s history (at least 32 years) and yet there has been neither a resolution to the crisis nor even the beginnings of a proletarian response.
