Class Consciousness and Working Class Political Organisation (Part VIII): The Decline of the Russian Revolution and the Cult of the Party

Class consciousness and working class political organisation - Part eight · Introduction · In the last two parts of this article we have looked at the Russian Revolution. Despite taking place more than 80 years ago, it remains the single most important event for shaping our understanding of the question of class consciousness in this epoch.

On Class Composition and Recomposition in the Globalisation of Capital (Part I)

(We are publishing here a text from Prometeo 6, VIth series, December 2002. This discusses the effects of changes in the structure of capitalism on the structure of the working class and the political consequences of these effects. In particular, it reviews the predictions of a text written ten years ago, the translation of which appeared in Internationalist Communist Review no.

Brazil: social democracy yet again

(Image - Lula may give social democracy a workers’ face, but nothing can erase its bourgeois content) · Papers over the cracks in capitalism · Introduction · Latin America has been teetering on the brink of total barbarism for so long that any new commentary seems unnecessary but in the last few years the world economic crisis and the neoliberal policies that have been adopted to deal with it have...

Porto Alegre

(Image - Porto Alegre, 2003: all reformism has left are utopian slogans which capitalism cannot satisfy and which can only help the bourgeoisie by “leading” the working class to defeat) · Confirmation of the urgent need for revolutionary organisation · Introduction · In January, while the annual World Economic forum of those with real economic clout was held in Davos, Switzerland, what has become...

This War is a Class War!

The imminent invasion of Iraq is not just a war on the people there. Like all wars in capitalism’s imperialist epoch this war is part of the way the system reproduces itself. The imperialist powers in 1914 started the modern epoch by going to war not only to solve their own economic problems but also to try to prevent the rising working class from ending the system of class privilege and...

Based on a statement of the International Bureau for the Revolutionary Party (1) · Humanity is once again about to experience one of its defining moments. The spectre of war is looming upon us. U.S. imperialism is about to unleash its fury upon the people of Iraq. Deportations, destruction, massacres of innocent and defenceless citizens: the bloody cycle which recommenced more than a year ago with the Nazi-style provocation of Sharon has tragically accelerated. Yet Israeli mini-imperialism has always had a free hand. Thanks to the US veto in the UN Israel has been allowed the luxury of invading territory which no international law could possibly permit and...

How to Fight for Peace

Mounting demonstrations against war have shown that there is massive public resistance and we have to salute all those who are taking part in the movement against it. However we have also to warn against false friends. Those who are campaigning (like the Daily Mirror) for war to take place only after a United Nations resolution are actually preparing us for war.

Editorial

Firemen’s strike · As we go to press the first 8 day strike by the firemen is underway. It is now clear that the government torpedoed the 16% agreement reached by the fire Brigades Union (FBU) and the employers. The government fears 16% for the firemen could set the precedent for other public sector workers to follow and this would be intolerable.

Firefighters' strike

(Image - Firefighters on education workers’ picket line; but really effective joint action requires going beyond union control) · Spread the strikes! Stop the War Drive! · It’s not so long ago that Tony Blair was crowing about the end of class struggle. The working class, however, is still alive and kicking. The firefighters’ strike is the first for 25 years and comes at a time of growing unrest.

Countdown to war with Iraq

(Conformity, blind allegiance, complacency, uniformity and silence are also useful in the war against the working class) · The UN resolution passed on 8th November 2002 has started the clock ticking for the US’s new war with Iraq. The period of manoeuvring and phoney opposition to the US by its rivals has ended with the US achieving more or less everything it wanted.
