The internationalists

The dispute is framed by the attempt to control a small uninhabited archipelago located between Okinawa and Taiwan in the East China Sea. For the Japanese the archipelago is called Senkaku (Tokyo has administered it since 1972 when it was abandoned by the Americans), and Diaoyu in China, whose claim to ownership is based on strategic need for the defence of its territorial waters.

The document which follows is a rough outline of our introductory remarks in our meeting in the London Anarchist Bookfair (2013). We say “rough” since we had intended to record the meeting but failed to do so. We have since had quite a few requests (even criticisms of our failure), from those not present, to make some kind of account of the meeting.

The latest UN Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) report makes dismal reading. It states loud and clear that global warming is caused by human activity, and sees the argument on this issue as now settled. Since its last report in 2007, there has been no significant attempt to cut global emissions, in fact the rate of emissions of greenhouse gases has accelerated.

On 1 April 2013 the Legal Aid Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act brought in massive cuts to legal aid. The result is that civil legal aid will generally no longer be available for areas of law such as employment, welfare benefits, clinical negligence, immigration, debt, divorce and custody of children.
